Mainframe Developer

Location Boston, MA

Role Summary:
The Mainframe Developer will design, develop, maintain, and enhance mainframe-based applications and systems. The role requires strong expertise in mainframe technologies such as COBOL, JCL, VSAM, CICS, and DB2, along with the ability to analyze and optimize existing systems to meet business requirements efficiently.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Application Development:
Design and develop high-performing, scalable mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, and CICS.
Modify, test, and debug existing programs to meet business and technical requirements.
2. Database Management:
Perform data modeling and optimization for VSAM and DB2.
Write and optimize SQL queries for seamless data interaction.
3. System Analysis and Design:
Analyze user requirements, workflows, and system architecture to design robust mainframe solutions.
Collaborate with business analysts to create technical specifications.
4. Integration and Testing:
Integrate mainframe systems with other enterprise systems.
Perform unit, integration, and performance testing to ensure reliability and scalability.
5. Maintenance and Support:
Provide ongoing support, troubleshoot production issues, and apply fixes in a timely manner.
Conduct regular system maintenance and updates to ensure optimal performance.
6. Documentation and Reporting:
Document application workflows, data models, and system changes.
Generate reports to support business processes and decision-making.
7. Collaboration:
Work with cross-functional teams, including QA, DevOps, and project managers, to deliver end-to-end solutions.
Participate in Agile/Scrum meetings and provide status updates.


Skills and Qualifications:
Must-Have Skills:
Strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, and DB2.
Proficiency in debugging tools like Expeditor or IBM Debug Tool.
Knowledge of mainframe utilities like DFSORT, File-AID, and SDSF.
Experience with batch processing and scheduling tools like CA-7 or TWS.
Preferred Skills:
Familiarity with integration technologies such as MQ Series or web services.
Experience in migrating mainframe applications to modern platforms.
Understanding of Agile development methodologies.
Exposure to cloud platforms or hybrid mainframe-cloud environments.


Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Attention to detail and ability to handle complex systems.


Experience:
5+ years of experience in mainframe application development and support.
Experience in system integration and performance optimization is a plus.
Educational Qualifications:
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
